Mathematics, or more colloquially, "math", is one of the most important subjects that students learn in school. Not only do good mathematical skills form a necessary for understanding of other subjects, especially the sciences, but also, math is an important life skill. Learning math usually of course begins at young age, sometimes even at home, with learning numbers and counting. At kindergarten and then school, students then progress through arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), and eventually to more advanced topics such as algebra, geometry, graphs and charts, and statistics. In all these areas, but especially during the learning of arithmetic, practice and rehearsal is one of the most ways for students to improve their mastery of the topic.

Thanks to the discovery of neuroplasticity, also called brain plasticity or brain malleability, we now know that groups of neurons in the brain create new connections and pathways among themselves every time we acquire a new skill, learn new things or memorize new information. Changes in neural connections create long lasting functional changes in the brain. It is incalculably important to know how these two fundamental skills, keyboarding and cursive writing, affect the brain and the learning process. In education as in medicine the creed should be "first do no harm." Many neuroscientists are examining and have published studies on cursive handwriting has effect on pathways in the brain, particularly with young learners. We do not yet know how changing from cursive to mostly keyboarding is affecting young learners brains but evidence is mounting that indicates that caution must be taken before discarding cursive handwriting from our nation has primary grade curriculum. Students who are not ready to move on to do fraction work (or decimals or percentages) are either unsuccessful the rest of their math careers, or memorize the algorithms and get stuck later in higher level math courses. Either case requires extra help to survive high school or college math curriculum because the developmental phases in mathematics cannot be avoided. If a student did not understand a fundamental concept such as fraction operations, they will not be successful in learning topics that use these ideas, such as solving equations, graphing linear relationships, or manipulating precalculus problems.
I am a Certified Handwriting Analyst who analyzes writing at private and corporate events and relates personality traits to people from the "paper mirror" of their handwriting. As a Handwriting Analyst, I find it jaw-dropping that the printing of children and many young adults has appears to be identical, reminiscent of the Stepford Wives movie of the past. Most scripts have huge lower-case letters (middle/mundane zone), and very short upper loops (upper/abstract zone). While less classroom time invested in cursive and penmanship skills could be the reason for the predominance of printing, it does not explain these specific, identical stroke changes to children has script. The dominant "middle zone" and short "upper zone" personify sweeping changes in the attitude of Generation Y and Z, vastly different in character from the Boomers and well on its way to be the new "universal" mind set.
For many children, math is neither fun nor easy. Many children find it difficult and uninteresting and unfortunately this attitude can lead to less chance of success and further distress. But changing a negative attitude towards math into a positive one can be as easy as making math more fun. One of the best ways to do this is with the use of math games. Fun math games can be used in all areas of math and they are a great way introduce math concepts and to practice basic math skills. If you choose the right math games they will not be complex to play or to learn, or time consuming. There are many simple, quick math games that can be played with little or no equipment.
