Homeschool worksheets are a vital part of the student has homeschool experience. They allow the child to test his or her knowledge, and they offer them a practical application for their learning. Worksheets also, when used properly, provide both the students and parent / tutor immediate feedback as to the child has progress. This means they can be used to point out areas where the student needs further reinforcement. Homeschool worksheets fortunately will not over-tax your budget. There are many places where you can get them at extremely low costs. In fact, several websites offer printable worksheets for free.
Little regard has been given to the interrelationships of handwriting development and reading, spelling and composition. As a result many kids educated in the last two decades cannot write in or even read cursive. Many policy decisions were made without researching the possible impact on young students who are still developing their reading, writing, and motor skills. Specifically, how these skills relate to cursive handwriting instruction. That may be changing. The Educational Summit titled "Handwriting in the 21st Century" held in Washington, D.C. included the attendance of professors, neuroscientists, teachers and interested citizens. Presenters shared cross-disciplinary handwriting research and attendees voiced their opinions about whether-and how-this skill should be taught.
One great thing about these games is that you and your students are probably already familiar with the original versions of the games. This makes your job a lot easier because learning how to play the game is not a big deal, since most players have seen or played the original game. This way, kids can get into the game quicker and start building fraction skills even faster! In order to make an easy Concentration type game, you create sets of fraction word cards and their corresponding picture cards. Students lay out the sets of cards face down. Then, they take turns choosing two cards to try to find matches. If a match is found, they keep their matched cards and their turn continues. If not, they turn the cards back over and the next player continues by searching for matches. For instance a player would have a match if they turned over the fractional words two-thirds and a picture that showed two-thirds shaded on a card. The winner is the person who has the greatest number of cards.
This is not the first time in history where it is assumed that handwriting will soon go the way of the dinosaurs. When the typewriter was introduced, many believed that people would not hand write anymore. We must emphasize the importance of handwriting as many of our historical documents are written in cursive. The beautifully written Declaration of Independence included. If children are not taught cursive handwriting, they will not be able to read these documents let alone letters left to them from another generation. Never before has this country produced college bound students who can neither write nor read cursive. It is a slowly dying art form that we must not let go of.
The Common Core Standards for education are beginning to be rolled out in schools across the country. Many people are unaware that the Language Arts section of the Common Core standards has omitted cursive handwriting as a subject that must be taught. As it is not included in the Common Core Standards, cursive handwriting is relegated to a "as we have time" or "if we chose to teach it" position in the classroom. While many of the public schools have dropped it most of the private schools continue to teach it. The reduction in instruction time for cursive handwriting has slowly and subtlety taken place. Sometime in the 1980 has cursive handwriting began to receive less and less classroom instruction. It changed from the excessive two hours a day in the forties and fifties to the current fifteen minutes two or three times a week. Schools often start teaching cursive at the end of second grade and little instruction extends after the third grade.
