Back in the dark ages of education, students spent 40 minutes 2-3 times a week doing drill and practice with a teacher who walked around and watched us do the work according to directions: up, down, up, down, etc. or up, down, curve to the left, up to the line and cross the lines, around and back to the line then out (that was the letter p). We used fountain pens so mistakes could not be erased and the teacher could see where we did not follow directions - boring was an understatement and probably what contributed to the lawsuit about drill/practice work in schools. Drill and practice is necessary for some skills to be learned. Without the repetition and practice, our bodies do not retain the information. Drill and practice is consistently used in athletics: throwing, catching, defensive/offensive techniques, etc. Athletes become adept through practice. Education has eliminated much practice in the classroom in favor of other skills which are also needed. Cursive writing has been sacrificed to those other skills.
For small kids the shape sorting puzzles are the best fun activity which keeps them busy and help them learn about different things in an interesting way. In this puzzle, the various shaped blocks are made which are to be placed in the appropriately shaped slot. If you have a kid of less than one year of age then this puzzle is very helpful. For kids having an age between two to four years can use a word find puzzles and word scramble puzzles. These puzzles are easy to make and are fun to use. If you are an internet savvy kid then there are numerous online scramble puzzle options. For younger kids there are many subjects like nature, holiday spots, transportation, animals, birds and lot more, which are used in these puzzles.
Remember that kids put more attention on animation. They are more interested on having fun so it is best for a teacher to teach them write letters in a fun way. Teachers may have noticed that when children are just being told on what to do, they may not do it right out of lack of interest. Remember that with the so many worksheets available, choose one that is best suited for a certain lesson. Plan ahead what type of worksheet to use for a given day, depending on what you plan to teach.
