Even though personal one-on-one tutoring is probably the most effective form of tutoring, there are still plenty of excellent tutoring resources online that you can utilize. Here are some of the best online tutoring resources that you will find on the web. Sylvan Learning is one of the top providers of tutoring and supplemental education services for students of all ages and skill levels. They offer instruction on all subjects including Math, Reading, Writing, Study Skills and Test Prep. While also having 900 learning centers across the country, they also have a lot of great online resources that you can check out for free. Tutor.com has over 5 million online tutoring sessions that have been completed and has thousands of tutors at your disposal 24/7. They have been around since 1998 and offer everything from Interactive Classrooms with live Chat, recorded sessions for playback, shared documents, screen-sharing and much more.
Successful students actually plan what they are going to do during their study time. As in, they actually plan the time they will be studying and they set goals for what they will achieve during their study. For example, your new habit could be saying I will study from 5 to 6.30 pm with a 15 minute break at 5.45 pm. At 6.30 pm I will have done all my maths worksheets and my history homework. I will then go online and get some solid Facebook time under my belt. Planning is no joke. If you want to be successful, do what successful students do. Create a plan, establish a goal and then stick to it like super glue. By having set times for doing work each day it will create a routine for you and as every good teacher will tell you, a routine is the first step towards developing a habit. And this habit is good. When you know that you have committed to work at a specific time each day you will be mentally prepared for it. You will know that 5 is study time. Just like you know 7 is dinner time (for some people!). Goal setting is also important. If you sit down with no clear thoughts about what you are trying to achieve during your study time you will just pointlessly drift along without knowing if you have done what you are supposed to do. So, create a target to achieve and focus your energy towards it. You will not regret it!
NEVER use "skill and drill" worksheets. These are the worksheets just made up of columns of problems. There are better materials out there, so do not resort to skill and drill. The very worst problem of skill and drill worksheets is the greatly increased chance of a practiced mistake. The same problem will likely appear several times on the same sheet. A wrong answer once means a wrong answer several times; and a practiced mistake takes hundreds of correct repetitions to fix. This danger alone is important enough to never use any worksheet. I am quite serious about how difficult it is to repair a practiced mistake. Learning is hard enough. Re-learning is much more difficult.
