Primary grade students learn to count objects in their world, moving on to basic number pattern ideas and labels such as multiples of 5 and 3, and the concepts of odd and even. But these are whole number ideas, and partial numbers (fractions and decimals) tend to be introduced on paper as an abstract idea. In other words, teachers should be repeatedly showing students what a third of something is, or how to cut things up into equal pieces, etc. I am not saying that this is avoided in elementary school, just that students are not given enough exposure to those ideas. Students should not be doing worksheets where they practice adding fractions with unlike denominators until they can draw pictures of these fractions, or show how to cut them up into equivalent pieces. The concrete learning idea of manipulating objects to show a mathematical idea needs to be embedded into the minds of young learners before they can practice similar math ideas on pencil and paper. This curriculum piece tends to be skipped or rushed in most elementary classrooms.
If your child learns in a more traditional way, there are many great books that teach more about math too. You can find excellent books for every level of math that will help you kids understand the concepts in a fun way. There are books on graphing, geometry, and other types of math too. Even though they are books, they do not have to be boring; in fact, many of these math books have Disney characters or other characters that your kids will recognize and love. Kids that love Disney characters will no doubt enjoy a math book that has their favorite character teaching them about math.
It is important to work with your child to help establish an appropriate pace. Part of the benefit of interactive learning games is that parents can monitor their child has progress and see how well things are going. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised at how much your kindergarten learns in a short period of time. Though kindergarten math can not be taught through learning games alone, interactive digital activities provide a good supplement to traditional education. When kids continue to practice what they have learned and become more comfortable with it outside the classroom, they are bound to do better as they progress through school. Learning games also give you an opportunity to work with your child at home, helping to boost his or her grasp of basic kindergarten math concepts. The use of digital learning games to teach kindergarten math is by no means a stand-in for traditional education. However, when kids are presented with a fun, interactive learning environment in their own homes, they can build skills and get a deeper understanding of the concepts that will lead to better classroom performance and a more positive school experience.
Computer games can be another great way to help your kids learn and enjoy math. There are many math computer games that are great for kids, especially since so many kids are comfortable with using a computer and enjoy playing games on it. You can even find great math games for the computer that will allow your whole family to play. Some kids may have difficulty with math because of a short attention span, and using computer games is a great way to keep their attention while they learn math.
This is also another Thanksgiving printable game that revolves around racing the other players in order to win. That is to say, the players must unscramble the various trick words they are given to uncover the harvest and Thanksgiving themed words that lie under the surface. The player that is able to uncover the word first collects the points and the player who amasses the most points wins the game. Yup, the person who can prove to be the best of the best can claim the mantel of being the top player. It is as simple as that and it is also fun too! The game is not overly difficult to play and it is not overly competitive either and this makes it a welcome and fun and enjoyable game to play during the Thanksgiving season. So, get in on all the fun and give Harvest Word Scramble a try!
Toddlers will play-with us or without us. It is our role to enhance the play when it is supportive and to intervene or change the situation if it appears too difficult and exceeds their abilities. Toddlers ca not see things or understand things "from another person has point of view". They are busy establishing their autonomy. Keep these in mind when you are planning your activities and your days with your two year olds will flow and be rewarding for them and for you.
The biggest complaint about budgeting is that it is too hard and takes too much time. Look for something that not only does all of the above functions, but is also easy to use from the get-go. The forms should be intuitive, easy to identify the cells to fill in data, and easy to read print out report. Finally, my gauge of a truly excellent budgeting worksheet is to ask yourself, "Is this a report that I had be comfortable taking to a financial planner, banker, or other professional for further advice or coaching?" If the answer is yes, then you have done a good job!
